Show Me the Money: Budget-Cutting Strategies for Cash-Strapped States
State governments are facing a fiscal crisis that is easily as severe as that at the height of the recession of the early 90's. 45 out of 50 states face budget deficits, many of truly staggering proportions. Governors and state legislatures everywhere are being called on to fix the problem, often with either short-term fixes and accounting tricks that leave the underlying problems intact or tax increases which will only exacerbate them by crippling the economy. This report by Manhattan Institute Senior Fellow Bill Eggers, released in conjunction with the American Legislative Exchange Council, demonstrates why these strategies are fatally flawed, and offers a blueprint for real, long-term solutions to state budget crises.
