2022 City Journal Awards

Wednesday September 2022

William Barr Former Attorney General
Heather Mac Donald Thomas W. Smith Fellow
Contributing Editor, City Journal

The Manhattan Institute has long fought to keep America and its great cities prosperous, safe, and free. In an age of conformity and cancellation, MI scholars boldly advance evidence-based arguments that challenge the status quo and enrich our nation’s public discourse. Our flagship magazine, City Journal, is home to a community of writers and thinkers who produce exceptional investigative reporting coupled with actionable policy solutions.

This year, we inaugurated the City Journal Awards, which recognize individuals whose powerful ideas have pushed back on destructive policies and inspired larger efforts to protect the liberties and unleash the potential of all Americans. Our 2022 honorees: Attorney General William Barr, for his steady and principled leadership in the battle against violent crime under multiple presidential administrations; and the Manhattan Institute’s own Heather Mac Donald, for her pioneering contributions to public discourse on fundamental questions of cultural excellence and the rule of law.

Barr and Mac Donald exemplify the intellectual independence and civic courage that City Journal champions – and that the Manhattan Institute will continue to recognize with this award in the years ahead.
