Manhattan Institute Fellows Recognized for their Work on Homelessness, Intellectual Freedom

NEW YORK, NY – The Manhattan Institute (MI) is pleased to announce that senior fellows Stephen Eide and Ilya Shapiro have received awards from The Doe Fund and the Steamboat Institute, respectively.

Stephen Eide will be honored with the inaugural George T. McDonald Award from The Doe Fund, in recognition of his work addressing homelessness and mental illness in America. In June 2022, Stephen published his first book, Homelessness in America: The History and Tragedy of an Intractable Social Problem and his research on this pressing issue has been featured in National Affairs, the New York Daily News, and The Wall Street Journal among other outlets. The Doe Fund focuses its mission on solving homelessness, economic injustice and recidivism and this year’s inaugural award is in honor of George T. McDonald, the late founder of The Doe Fund. The award will be given at The Doe Fund Gala: A Bridge to Opportunity, on October 20. Tickets can be found here.

Ilya Shapiro has been awarded the 2022 Courage in Education Award from the Steamboat Institute, in recognition of his efforts to promote intellectual diversity on campus. Ilya gained widespread support for his decision to stand up for free speech at Georgetown University Law Center earlier this year; his Wall Street Journal op-ed detailing his experience can be found here. Ilya recently published an updated paperback version of Supreme Disorder: Judicial Nominations and the Politics of America’s Highest Court and his work has been featured in the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times among other outlets. Ilya has also testified before Congress and state legislatures and has filed more than 500 amicus curiae briefs in the Supreme Court. He also recently launched a Substack, Shapiro’s Gavel, where he chronicles “everything from legal and constitutional analysis to thought pieces about the state of America.” The Steamboat Institute presented the award to Ilya at their 14th Annual Freedom Conference in Beaver Creek, Colorado on August 26-27.
