Eric Kaufmann and Charles Fain Lehman Join Manhattan Institute as Adjunct Fellows

NEW YORK, NY — The Manhattan Institute (MI) is pleased to welcome Eric Kaufmann and Charles Fain Lehman as adjunct fellows.

Kaufmann, professor of politics at Birkbeck College, University of London and author of Whiteshift, Shall the Religious Inherit the Earth, and The Rise and Fall of Anglo-America, will focus on identity, demography, and political culture. Lehman, a staff writer at the Washington Free Beacon, will work under the auspices of MI’s Policing and Public Safety Initiative. In addition to writing research reports and issue briefs for MI, both scholars will regularly contribute articles to MI’s City Journal magazine. Kaufmann and Lehman were published online in City Journal this week.

“For years, I’ve been an avid follower of both Eric’s and Charles’s work, so I’m delighted to welcome them to MI,” said Institute president Reihan Salam. “Eric’s wide-ranging academic work has contributed enormously to our understanding of what it takes to build successful pluralistic democracies. And Charles has quickly made a mark as an unusually rigorous and thoughtful reporter. Each of them brings a unique perspective to the issues they study, and they will do much to expand our ability to conduct original, pathbreaking research.”

“I’m glad to be joining the Manhattan Institute, which is emerging as a leader in developing policy ideas that can revive a more balanced high-cultural ecosystem,” Kaufmann said. “Higher education, especially in the humanities and social sciences, has become a near-complete progressive monoculture which is increasingly inimical to academic freedom and the advancement of knowledge. A culture which privileges emotional safety for identity groups over the pursuit of truth began on campus and is spreading into other institutions. In the coming decades, only well-crafted government regulation informed by intelligent policy research has a realistic hope of reversing this development.”

Kaufmann is an editor of the academic journal Nations and Nationalism, has edited books on demography and ethnicity, and has written for the New York Times, Newsweek, Foreign Affairs, New Statesman, National Review, and Prospect. He holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science and lives in London.

Lehman’s work on criminal justice, immigration, and social issues has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, National Review Online, and Tablet, among other publications, and he is a contributing writer with the Institute for Family Studies. Originally from Pittsburgh, he now lives in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C.
