A Teachers Union Smears Asians as Communists

A ‘strong association’ kills a history curriculum bill in the Virginia Senate.

The Democrats who control the Virginia Senate don’t want the commonwealth’s schoolchildren to learn about communism. By a party-line committee vote on Feb. 16 they killed a bill, which had passed the Republican House of Delegates, that would have required public schools to honor on each Nov. 7 the 100 million or so people killed by communist regimes around the world and to align their history curricula accordingly. (Nov. 7, 1917, was the day Lenin overthrew the provisional Russian government and proclaimed the creation of what became the Soviet Union.)

What’s wrong with teaching kids about communism? “We are concerned that this bill would subject Asian-American students to anti-Asian sentiments,” a spokeswoman for the Virginia Education Association was quoted as saying. Lenin was born west of the Urals—that is, in Europe—and Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels were German. But of the five remaining communist states—China, Cuba, North Korea, Laos and Vietnam—four are in Asia.
