Charles W. Calomiris

Charles Calomiris is the Henry Kaufman Professor of Financial Institutions at Columbia Business School and director of the Business School’s Program for Financial Studies Initiative on Finance and Growth in Emerging Markets. His recent book Fragile By Design: The Political Origins of Banking Crises and Scarce Credit received the American Publishers Award for the best book in Business, Finance and Management.

Charles W. Calomiris is the Henry Kaufman Professor of Financial Institutions at Columbia Business School, a professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, a book fellow at the Manhattan Institute, a member of the Shadow Open Market Committee, a member of the Financial Economists Roundtable, and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

 

Calomiris also codirects the Hoover Institution’s Program on Regulation and the Rule of Law and is comanaging editor of the Journal of Financial Intermediation. His book with Stephen Haber, Fragile by Design: The Political Origins of Banking Crises and Scarce Credit (2014), was named one of the books of the year by the Financial Times and by Bloomberg Businessweek. Calomiris served on the International Financial Institution Advisory Commission, a congressional commission to advise the U.S. government on the reform of the IMF, World Bank, regional development banks, and WTO. His research spans banking, corporate finance, financial history, monetary economics, political economy, and economic development. He holds a B.A. in economics from Yale University and a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University.
