Dr. Joseph Gulfo, MBA visited YLC on September 3, providing members with an intimate glimpse of the personal consequences resulting from FDA slowdowns. Dr. Gulfo discussed his book, Innovation Breakdown: How the FDA and Wall Street Cripple Medical Advances. Innovation Breakdown documents Dr. Gulfo's triumphant struggle to gain FDA approval for MelaFind, a medical device that saves lives by identifying potential melanomas. According to the Mercatus Center's Alex Tabarrok in his Wall Street Journal book review, "the climax to this medical thriller comes when... Dr. Gulfo delivers an impassioned speech, à la "Twelve Angry Men," to the FDA's advisory committee." It took over 2 years to gain approval for MelaFind in the US. The process took only 5 months in Europe.
Dr. Gulfo is currently the CEO of Breakthrough Medical Innovations in addition to teaching cancer biology and business classes in entrepreneurship. He received his MD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and his MBA from Seton Hall University.
