On July 9, 2014, The Wall Street Journal's Bret Stephens addressed YLC members, discussing the current state of foreign affairs and the Obama administration’s response to crises in Iraq, Syria, and Ukraine. Referencing his book, America in Retreat: The New Isolationism and the Coming Global Disorder, Stephens argued that the resurgence of isolationism in the U.S. is an invitation to global disorder unseen since the 1930s. As he views it, retreating from our global responsibilities will come at a devastating price to our security and prosperity. Stephens received the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for commentary for a selection of his weekly “Global View” columns. He is the deputy editorial page editor responsible for the international opinion pages and a member of the Journal’s editorial board.
