The Prince of the City: Giuliani, New York and the Genius of American Life

26
Thursday May 2005

Speakers

Fred Siegel Senior Fellow, Progressive Policy Institute; Professor, Cooper Union for Science and Art

In his previous book, The Future Once Happened Here, New York, D.C., L.A. and the Fate of America’s Big Cities, Fred Siegel chronicled how the social programs of the 1960s created a 30-year-long “rolling riot” that all but ensured the continued decline of the American city. In his recently published book, The Prince of the City: Giuliani, New York and the Genius of American Life, Siegel, a former editor of City Journal, looks at how the policies that Mayor Rudolph Giuliani implemented contributed to New York City’s incredible revival. Siegel shows how the mayor’s tough-minded, even Machiavellian approach to city government helped turn around a city America had all but given up on, triggered and propelled the nationwide drop in crime, and brought the future back to New York and other cities.
