As the world’s population migrates to urban areas, the opportunities for greater economic prosperity, longer and healthier lives, and more individual freedom have never been greater. At the same time, challenges facing global cities have never been more severe, with housing shortages, insufficient infrastructure, and lagging administrative, educational and healthcare systems often failing to meet the needs of diverse urban populations. Some cities stand out as shining examples of what works best, while others show us what not to do. Building upon his acclaimed book, “Triumph of the City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier, and Happier,” Glaeser will outline the preconditions that often lead to successful cities, while highlighting leading-edge ideas that are quickly shaping the future of cities around the world. Drawing on examples from around the globe, he will probe a broad range of questions related to why cities thrive—and how—including, how to continue spurring innovation in urban areas, what are the most effective and efficient ways to ensure that housing remains affordable, and what new models of transportation and infrastructure development might hold the key for smart growth.
