Reforming Teacher Education

18
Tuesday October 2005

Speaker: Sandra Stotsky, Research Scholar, School of Education, Northeastern University; Kate Walsh, President, National Council on Teacher Quality; Sharon Robinson, President & CEO, American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education;

Children cannot learn what their teachers do not know.

For the first time in our national history, the No Child Left Behind Act requires states to pay serious attention to teachers’ qualifications as a condition to receive federal funds for their schools. So far, however, there is no clear evidence that this linkage has led to academically stronger public school teachers or to changes in teacher preparation.

Our panelists offer their perspectives on the role of teacher education in preparing new teachers and present their ideas for reform.
