What makes a president great? Presidential Leadership, a new book edited by James Taranto and Leonard Leo, assesses each of our nation’s leaders, from George Washington to George W. Bush.

Taranto and Leo drew on a national survey of presidential rating from scholars in history, law, and political science, and then included an essay on each president (from both liberal and conservative writers ). The results are fascinating, particularly in this election year, when issues of character, background, military service, and suitability for office are receiving special scrutiny.
