Michael Barone Senior Writer, U.S. News & World Report

In his new book, Our First Revolution: The Remarkable British Upheaval That Inspired America’s Founding Fathers, Michael Barone demonstrates how the ideals of freedom and individual rights that inspired America’s revolution, along with many other defining principles of our national character, can be traced to Britain’s Glorious Revolution of 1688.

That revolution, Barone contends, led the way toward representative government, guaranteed liberties, the foundations of global capitalism, and a foreign policy opposed to aggressive foreign power. This series of events, he argues, laid the political groundwork for the world in which we now live.

Distinguished journalist and historian Michael Barone relates how this saga of palace intrigue inspired our own founding fathers to initiate America’s revolution and in turn make possible the blessings of freedom and prosperity that we enjoy today.
