John Maynard Keynes: Fighting for Freedom

10
Monday December 2001

Speakers

Lord Robert Skidelsky Professor of Political Economy, University of Warwick; 2001 Gelber Prize Winner

The first two volumes of Robert Skidelsky’s definitive biography of John Maynard Keynes were hailed as publishing events on both sides of the Atlantic. This third and final volume, selected as a Book of the Year by The Economist, explores the economist’s role in financing Britain’s war effort and his contributions to the postwar economic order. Lord Skidelsky’s fascinating, but sometimes painful, account of Alliance politics in the war against Hitler is a timely reminder that conflicts of national interest do not disappear even when parties are pursuing a conmon cause. This is a work that provides an invaluable overview of issues that remain at the center of international political and economic debate.
