Fragile By Design: The Political Origins of Banking Crises and Scarce Credit

Thursday February 2014

Prof. Charles W. Calomiris Columbia Business School

Moderator: Robert J. Samuelson, Washington Post

Who gets to be a banker? Who has access to credit? Who pays for bank bailouts and rescues? Why has the United States had 12 systemic banking crises since 1804 – and Canada has had none?

Charles Calomiris, coauthor with Stephen Haber of a new book that probes these difficult questions, will offer a revealing exploration of the way politics inevitably intrudes into bank regulation. The discussion will be led by Robert J. Samuelson.

The event is hosted in partnership with the Jerome A. Chazen Institute of International Business at Columbia Business School. Registration is required. There is no charge.
