Covid-19 has taken its toll on our faith communities. Nearly every faith community in America has seen large drops in physical and virtual attendance during the pandemic, representing a devastating blow to civil society and associational life. While many faith communities have sharply limited in-person operation—accepting these costs as the price of curbing a deadly virus—others have pushed for a speedy return to physical gatherings, resisted lockdowns in court, and held protests. What is it at stake for our wider communities as these institutions suffer, how are religious Americans leading during this crisis, and where do we go from here?
