27

Speakers

Paul A. Offit M.D. Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases & Director of the Vaccine Education Center, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; Maurice R. Hilleman Professor of Vaccinology & Professor of Pediatrics, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine

In 2010, an outbreak of pertussis, also known as “whooping cough,” killed ten children in California. Other once-rare diseases, like measles and mumps, are also making a comeback in communities around the country. How could this happen when effective vaccines to prevent these diseases have been available for over fifty years? The answer: A group of advocates who vocally insist, against all evidence to the contrary, that vaccines are poison, are convincing parents, caretakers, and other adults to reject vaccines for themselves and their families.

In his new book, Deadly Choices, Paul A. Offit, M.D. takes a much-needed look behind the curtain of the anti-vaccine movement and tells the story of a handful of parents who are fighting back against this epidemic of fear. Please join us for this important discussion of a vital public-health issue with one of the country’s best-known infectious-disease experts.
