Bringing Leadership Empowerment and Accountability To The New York Public School System

05
Thursday October 2006

Speakers

Joel I. Klein Chancellor, New York City Department of Education

Schools Chancellor Joel Klein is working to transform the culture of the New York City school system so that everyone in the system embraces the idea that successful schools need strong leaders empowered to make decisions and be held responsible for results.

In 2003, Chancellor Klein launched Children First, a comprehensive school reform effort. Children’s First’s goal is creating 1,400-plus successful schools, where all of the 1.1 million schoolchildren in New York City are able to learn the skills and receive the support they need to realize their potential.

Chancellor Klein will discuss the steps he is taking to accomplish these goals, focusing on the three core principles that underlie the reforms: leadership, empowerment, and accountability.
