The City Journal Award

The annual City Journal Award recognizes individuals who have pushed back against destructive ideas and inspired efforts to protect liberty and unleash the potential of all Americans. This year we are pleased to honor Ben Shapiro, co-founder of the Daily Wire.

Since its founding in 1990, City Journal has offered a stimulating mix of hard-headed practicality and cutting-edge theory, rapidly expanding its scope and its audience to become the nation’s premier urban-policy magazine. It is now known to be a national, not just a local, force, with readership including opinion leaders, cultural decision-makers, and public officials spanning from coast to coast.

This year we are thrilled to honor Ben Shapiro, co-founder of the Daily Wire. Shapiro has distinguished himself as a steadfast advocate for truth and liberty in an era when both are increasingly under attack. His courage, intellectual clarity, and dedication to open discourse embody the very spirit of the City Journal Award.

Last year we honored the Washington Free Beacon for its fearless journalism and intellectual rigor. The award was accepted by Eliana Johnson, the Free Beacon’s brilliant Editor-in-Chief.

In 2023, we honored Christopher F. Rufo for his singular role in exposing harmful ideologies that shape curricula in our nation’s K–12 schools and universities, as well as for his other ground-breaking work.

The inaugural City Journal Award in 2022 had two distinguished recipients: Attorney General William Barr, for his steady and principled leadership in the battle against violent crime under multiple presidential administrations, and the Manhattan Institute’s own Heather Mac Donald, for her pioneering contributions to public discourse on fundamental questions of cultural excellence and the rule of law.
