Daniel Di Martino Responds to the End of Title 42

NEW YORK, NY – Manhattan Institute graduate fellow Daniel Di Martino comments on what the end of Title 42 means, and makes recommendations for managing the problem of illegal immigration at the border:

"This morning, the termination of the COVID-19 public health emergency brought an end to Border Patrol’s authority to expel migrants under Title 42. While many predict further chaos at the border as a result, the public health emergency had to end, and now is the time for the administration to rely on better permanent policies to stop the inflow of illegal immigrants. The administration is pursuing expedited removal under Title 8 as an alternative to Title 42, with more legal consequences for violators. But, the crisis won’t end until we reduce the years-long wait to receive asylum decisions, which encourage countless migrants to make false asylum claims to be allowed to live and work in the United States. To solve the border crisis, we should: (1) double the number of immigration court judges, (2) dedicate congressional funding for more USCIS employees to screen migrants for credible asylum claims at the border, and (3) rely on targeted legal paths that successfully reduce illegal migration such as the parole process for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans."
