Andy Smarick Joins Manhattan Institute

NEW YORK, NY — The Manhattan Institute is pleased to announce that Andy Smarick will join the Institute as a senior fellow, beginning on June 22, 2020. His research and writing will focus on education, civil society, and the principles of American conservatism.

Smarick boasts a long career of research and service in education and public policy more broadly. Before joining the Manhattan Institute, he directed the program on civil society, education, and work at the R Street Institute, where he was a resident senior fellow. Previously, he was a Morgridge Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and served as president of the Maryland State Board of Education. He has also worked at the White House as an aide in the Domestic Policy Counsel and was a deputy assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Education. From 2011–2012, he served as New Jersey’s deputy commissioner of education.

The author or editor of four books, Smarick’s work has also been published in The Atlantic, Washington Post, National Review, American Conservative, Education Week, New York Daily News, and Philanthropy. He was recently appointed by Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and confirmed by the state senate to a term on the state’s Higher Education Commission, which coordinates and establishes statewide higher education policies and administers state financial aid programs.
“Andy has long been a leading voice on the importance of local solutions to society’s problems, advancing ideas grounded in the principles of American conservatism, including federalism, civic virtue, and self-government,” said Reihan Salam, president of the Manhattan Institute. “We are thrilled to add him to our ranks as we continue the institute’s longtime work of advancing education reform and a reinvigorated civil society.”

“I’m thrilled to join the Manhattan Institute, an organization dedicated to using the principles of American conservatism to improve the lives of our fellow citizens,” said Smarick. “I’ve long admired the work of MI’s scholars, and I’m excited to contribute to Reihan’s vision for the organization and for public policy, civil debate, and research more generally.”

“Andy has contributed a great deal to our understanding of the most effective bonds among schools, families, and communities throughout his career as both a researcher and civil servant,” added Ray Domanico, senior fellow and director of education policy. “We are incredibly honored that he is joining our team and look forward to working together.”
