The Past is Prologue: What's Next For Public Higher Education

Matthew Goldstein Chancellor, The City University of New York

The State of New York is facing the challenges that all states are confronting: how to provide an uncompromising educational experience for students attending public colleges and universities, and how best to pay for it.

Led by Chancellor Matthew Goldstein, The City University of New York has been successfully addressing issues such as accessibility, academic rigor, accountability, and public/private support, most recently through the “CUNY Compact,” a new approach to financing public education.

At the same time, public higher education institutions like CUNY must make decisions regarding investments in key areas, most notably in all levels of science and technology, considered a sine qua non of a healthy country, particularly as the United States faces growing global competition from countries training highly qualified scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.
