Elected in November, 2001, Mayor Manny Diaz is presiding over Miami’s renaissance. As the cover story of Governing magazine recently noted, Mayor Diaz has brought Miami back from the brink of bankruptcy. Miami’s bonds now receive an A+ rating—the highest in the city’s history.

What’s more, Mayor Diaz has made crime reduction a top priority by hiring NYPD veteran John Timoney aspolice chief. Under Chief Timoney, the reformed Miami Police Department has established an enviable record in crime reduction and improved quality of life. Furthermore, Miami’s police have reduced crime without excessive violence, having gone an unprecedented sixteen months without a single officer firing his weapon.
