Development Officer, Membership and Special Events

Manhattan Institute for Policy Research (MI) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy think tank headquartered in midtown Manhattan. For more than 40 years, MI scholars have been committed to developing and disseminating policy ideas based on conservative and classical liberal principles; the policy solutions that they put forward are research-based and intended to help foster greater economic choice and individual responsibility in New York City and across America. To finance our scholarship, MI relies on gifts from generous supporters; development officers are tasked with raising financial support to underwrite MI’s work.

Presently we are seeking to fill the role of Development Officer, Membership and Special Events. This team member will raise financial support for MI through three core functions:

  1. Designing and executing compelling events, especially for our New York-based young professionals’ group, the MI Young Leaders Circle (YLC);
  2. Helping to lead the in-house team that plans and executes the Institute’s marquee annual event—the Alexander Hamilton Award Dinner—a black-tie fundraising gala, at which we host 650-700 guests, including high-level honorees and VIPs, and raise about $3 million; and
  3. Strategically managing relationships with hundreds of MI’s members in New York City and across America, through database management, coordination of mailings, and more.

MI’s Young Leaders Circle (YLC) is a thriving community of young professionals that meets monthly to hear from experts in public policy. Duties related to YLC are membership management and growth, advance event planning, (securing speakers, managing registration), and execution of regular YLC events and extra-special celebrations, plus various smaller meetings.

We are looking for a person who maintains a flexible and team-oriented attitude—getting the job done is your top priority and you are willing (and look for opportunities) to jump in and assist other members of your team. Experience in strategic planning, logistics, and hospitality (person-to-person engagement) all are required. The successful applicant should have at least three-to-five years of work experience and be capable of articulating how their past experience has prepared them to do the job described above. Salary is commensurate with experience.
