The Shrinking Labor Force

The labor force participation rate fell to 63.2 percent in September. In 2000, the rate was 67 percent. 

If current labor force participation rates were at 2000 levels, 9.4 million additional people would be in the labor force (more than the population of New Jersey). 

The last time the labor force participation rate was this low was 1978.
