Student Loan Debt is Suffocating Consumers

There is over $1 trillion in outstanding student loan debt—the largest single category among non-housing debts.

Since 2004 the amount of outstanding student loan debt has increased by 280 percent even as the other categories of non-housing debt decreased by 5 percent.

In 2004 student loan debt was 4 percent of mortgage debt. Today that number has tripled to 12 percent.
